INTRODUCTION:
Payatas
is a place in Quezon City where garbage is deposited. Conservative estimates
show that at least 10 tons of garbage from the Metro Manila are deposited there
every day. Thousands of families have built make-up houses and considered
Payatas their rightful place. People there collect from the garbage whatever
they can recycle or re-use, sell these and make money out of garbage. The
Vincentians as early as 1990 were given this place as a place for their
apostolate, to minister to the poor people. A parish was created by then
Cardinal Jaime Sin. The Vincentians called Ina ngLupangPangako Parish. Here the
Vincentians put up clinics, cooperative store, savings and loan, microfinance,
all meant to help the poor. The Basic Ecclesial Communities were also
established.
OBJECTIVES
The
Sisters of Our Lady of Amersfoort , during their leadership training, will have
an exposure in the Payatas area from Jan. 19 to Jan.22, 2015. They will
experience the life as lived by the poor people so that they can better
understand and appreciate the poverty and the deprivations of the poor, and
that in spite of it, the poor continue to live their faith in a loving God and
have their deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The poor can indeed
evangelize the Sisters!
