APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY

By Fr. Anton Rosari, SVD

What is Appreciative Inquiry?

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is an emerging paradigm of looking for what is right and moves toward it. By focusing on what is right rather than what is wrong, AI gives us access to the kind of energy that can be transformative. AI begins with the belief that we have a choice to choose to see possibilities and capabilities.

AI is a tool for Positive Revolution in Change. Change is everywhere. Every change has consequences, even if this change is only minor change. The reality of change happens to individuals, groups, organizations and society. For centuries philosophers have struggled with the definition of “change’. Heraclitus stated a famous dictum: “nothing endures but change”. This kind of change seems not intentional-change, but rather of the change that is a consequence of inherent potential for development associated with every entity (Kenter, 1992). In the appreciative Inquiry, we look at change as an intended change.  It is a “planned change”.

We are programmed to have a certain mind set. But the appreciative people always open to the new realm of possibilities, aware of life experiences, and create positive conversations.
